Salem Township, Pa. — The Caithness Freedom Generating Station team continued its annual tradition to close out 2023 helping those in need in the community by contributing $7,000 to local organizations.
Donations were made to Brandon’s Forever Home, Berwick United Way, Salvation Army of Berwick, Shickshinny Area Food Pantry, and Nescopeck Area Community Cupboard.
“Access to food, medicines, and other critical items sadly is an impossible challenge for many members of our local community, said Gary Keevill, Senior Vice President of Caithness Energy. “We are proud to join with other area businesses to partner with these invaluable community organizations that play an important role in providing much-needed resources for those in need.”
This latest round of community giving brings the Caithness Freedom team’s annual giving to more than $40,000 in 2023. In total, the Freedom team has supported several public improvement projects in Salem Township and the surrounding area, totaling more than $800,000 designated for completed community projects and future commitments.
Caithness Freedom generates more than 1,100 megawatts of reliable power, supplying approximately 900,000 homes and businesses in the region. The facility is one of the most efficient plants in the PJM Interconnection system, a regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in 13 Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.
The facility utilizes state-of-the-art technology that has enabled Freedom to produce significantly fewer emissions than older coal and natural gas power generators in Pennsylvania, some of which produce more than double the CO2 emissions that the Freedom facility produces. The facility also deploys dry-cooling technology which utilizes 95 percent lower amounts of water than a plant of the same size using traditional wet-cooling technology.
